The installer of the MPEG-2 PlaybackComponent may refuse to install the component in Lion and Mountain Lion. Apple states thecomponent is unnecessary in Lion and Mountain Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needsit.
To install the component in Lion or Mountain Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b8 betaabove; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2Component M. Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component inLion or Mountain Lion. Theoriginal installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of thebuilt-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion and Mountain Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still needto install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion and Mountain Lion. You don'thave to install QuickTime 7.
Also read the information for Snow Leopard below.
The Snow Leopard upgrade DVD released on August 28, 2009 may wipe thecontentofthe /System/Library/QuickTime folder during the upgrade process, anddelete your MPEG-2 Playback Component installed in that folder. To use MPEG-2 files with MPEG Streamclip you have to reinstall theMPEG-2 component or restore it from a backup copy.
If you are going to upgrade to SnowLeopard
Open the /System/Library/QuickTime folder and drag theQuickTimeMPEG2.component file to your desktop to make a copy of it.Then upgrade to Snow Leopard. When the upgrade is complete, open the/System/Library/QuickTime folder again and move theQuickTimeMPEG2.component file from the desktop to the/System/Library/QuickTime folder (enter your administrator password ifnecessary).
If you already upgraded to Snow Leopard
You have to reinstall or restore your MPEG-2 Playback Component.
If you have a Time Machine backup of your System folder, then open the/System/Library/QuickTime folder, enter Time Machine and go back intime until you see the QuickTimeMPEG2.component file; select that fileand then click Restore.
If you purchased the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the Apple OnlineStore, then you probably still have the DMG file that contains theinstaller. Use Spotlight to search for 'QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg': if youfind a file with that name, double-click it and then in the disk image,double-click the installer package for Intel Macs.
If you purchased the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the Apple OnlineStore but you can't find the QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg file, you can downloadthe file again from the Apple Online Store if you remember the Apple IDused when you originally purchased it (if you forgot your Apple ID thengo to Apple iforgot). Visitthe Apple Online Store, click on 'Account' in thestore menu, then click 'Downloadable Software Purchases,' enter yourApple ID and password, and click the link to the QuickTime MPEG-2Playback Component to download it again.
If you obtained the MPEG-2 Playback Component from the installation ofFinal Cut Studio, then you can reinstall it again from the Final CutStudio DVD. Insert the DVD and use the Finder's Go menu > Go ToFolder.. command to get to the /Volumes/Final CutStudio/Installer/Packages/ folderinside the DVD. Locate the QuickTimeMPEG2.pkg or theQuickTimeMPEG2Pro.pkg installer: double-click it to reinstall theMPEG-2 component.
This free software requires at least Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) andQuickTime 6. It is also compatible with Mac OS X 10.3.x (Panther), MacOS X 10.4.x (Tiger), Mac OS X 10.5.x (Leopard), Mac OS X 10.6.x (SnowLeopard), OS X Lion, OS X Mountain Lion, and QuickTime 7. Itworks with PowerPC and Intelbased Macs.
For MPEG-2 playback and conversion, you need the QuickTime MPEG-2Playback Component. You can buy it from Apple(www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2).If you have either Final Cut Pro orDVD Studio Pro, then the component is already installed and you don'thave to buy it; but you may need to download the latest version fromApple. If you bought an olderversion of the component, you can update it to the latest version(www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/update).Note that the MPEG-2 componentis neither required nor useful for MPEG-1 or MPEG-4 files. But it isrequired for VOB files and transport streams, because they are MPEG-2files.
For DivX playback and editing, you have to install DivX (www.divx.com/divx/mac).
You can also install another codec like 3ivx (www.3ivx.com)or XviD(n.ethz.ch/student/naegelic),but only with DivX 6.5 and later (or DivX 5.2.1) you canencode DivX files with MP3audio.
For FLV playback and export, you can download and install Perian (www.perian.org).
For WMV playback, you can install Flip4Mac WMVPlayer (www.flip4mac.com/wmv.htm).If you also need to export WMV files to another format you have to buyFlip4Mac WMV Player Pro.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR WMV EXPORT: if you want to export to WMV with Exportto Other Formats, the free Flip4MacWMV Player stops at 30 seconds; for full length export you have to buyFlip4Mac WMV Studio (www.flip4mac.com/wmv_studio.htm).
MPEG Streamclip lets you play and edit QuickTime, DV, AVI, MPEG-4,MPEG-1; MPEG-2 or VOB files or transport streams with MPEG, PCM, or AC3audio (MPEG-2 playback component required); DivX (with DivX 6) andWMV (with Flip4Mac WMV Player). MPEG Streamclip can export all theseformats to QuickTime, DV/DV50, AVI/DivX and MPEG-4 with high qualityencoding and even uncompressed or HD video.
Video conversion is performed in the YUV color space; you can choose toscale video to any frame size using a professional 2D-FIR scaler(better than bicubic) but you can also leave it unscaled. Otheroptional video processing features include a powerful motion-adaptivedeinterlacer, a field dominance converter, a chroma reinterlacer and anoption to perform interlaced scaling instead of progressive scaling.Audio can be converted to uncompressed or to IMA, AAC, MP2 or AMR usingthe high-quality MP1/MP2/AC3/PCM built-in decoders of MPEG Streamclip;it is also kept in perfect sync with video using a timekeeping system.
MPEG Streamclip can save edited movies as MOV files, and (whenpossible) as AVI or MP4 files. Edited MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 files are savedas MPEG or TS files.
MPEG Streamclip (with or without the MPEG-2 Playback Component) canalso convert MPEG-2 transport streams into muxed MPEG-2 files, forimmediate burning at full quality with Toast 6 or 7 and Sizzle; it canalso demux MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 files and transport streams with MPEG,AC3, PCM audio to M2V and AIFF (or M1A or AC3) files, for immediateburning at full quality with DVD Studio Pro or Toast 6 and 7. A specialdemuxing option is available for Final Cut Pro 4/5: this applicationdoes not work well with M2V files, but MPEG Streamclip can write aspecial 'unscaled' M2V file that preserves full video quality whenimported into Final Cut Pro.
MPEG Streamclip can handle files and streams larger than 4 GB, split inany number of segments, or with multiple audio tracks, and can alsooptionally handle timecode breaks. It is compatible with MPEG-1 andMPEG-2 video, MPEG layer 1/2 (MP1/MP2) audio, AC3/A52 audio, and PCMaudio.
The player included in MPEG Streamclip lets you preview the files andtransport streams before doing the conversion; it also lets youvisually set the In and Out points for the conversion so you canconvert just the part of the file you are interested in, and also cutcommercials and other unwanted parts, or edit the stream and join twostreams with Cut/Copy/Paste.
MPEG Streamclip supports batch processing: just drag some files in thebatch list, choose a conversion and a folder, click the Go button andMPEG Streamclip will automatically convert all your files.
MPEG Streamclip supports the DreamBox DM7000/DM5620/DM500 and theDM7020 (www.dream-multimedia-tv.de),and the TopfieldTF5000PVR/TF5000PVRt/TF5500PVR (www.topfield.co.kr),two importantfamilies of DVB set-top boxes (all digital satellite receivers, exceptthe TF5000PVRt which is terrestrial and supports DVB-T); two powerfulconnection tools for these devices have been developed and included inMPEG Streamclip. You'll no longer need to use FTP, mount SMB disks, oruse MacTF to download and upload files: MPEG Streamclip does this foryou. For the Topfield, you can even upload TAP files (you can find TAPshere: www.topfield.cc).And for the DreamBox DM7000, there is also amultiboot tool that lets you install firmware images in an external USBstick.
MPEG Streamclip is also compatible with most MPEG-2 devices that useprogram or transport stream files, including FireWire MPEG-2 deviceslike Sony IP7/MicroMV, Sony HDR-FX1 (www.sony.com)and JVC GR-HD1camcorders; DVHSrecorders; FireWire/Ethernet/USB set-top boxes or digital videorecorders, like EyeTV (www.elgato.com),ReplayTV, the Samsung SIR-T16,the Humax PVR-8000, the Homecast, the Technisat S2 and the Siemens M740AV; USB cameras like Panasonic SV-AV100, Sony T1 and JVC Everio(www.jvc.com);DVDcamcorders like Panasonic VDR-M70 and HitachiDZ-MV230. MPEG Streamclip is also compatible with most DVD recorders, since it can open and convert unencrypted VOB or VRO files, andsupports AC3 audio.
You can import transport stream files from FireWire MPEG-2 devicesusing DVHSCap or VirtualDVHS, two free applications available fromApple as part of the FireWire SDK 20(developer.apple.com/sdk).NOTE: the latest FireWire SDK is not publicly available, please scrolldown the list until you find the FireWire SDK 20, or click this directdownload link from Apple: FireWireSDK 20.
